50 - Yep, 50! - Tasty Treats in a Jar

When I was young, I distinctly remember my mom canning lots and lots of goodies at the end of each summer season. She'd make all sorts of phenomenal things from the bounty of our backyard garden -- things like green peppers, tomato sauce, peach marmalade, strawberry jam...oh, they were all wonderful!

Today, glass canning jars, which come in a variety of sizes and are really reasonably priced, are making an exciting comeback -- and not necessarily in the form of canning either!

They are, rather, being used as incredibly cute vessels in which to make and serve individual-sized portions. Mason, Ball, Kerr, and Weck are some of the more popular brands.

Especially now, with summer picnic season coming up, I'd like to share some extra-creative ideas, from salads and desserts to breakfast items and beverages -- 50 in all! -- to get you started in coming up with your own clever combinations for family and guests. What are some of your ideas?

Oh my God, I love all of these ideas! I'm definitely going out this weekend to pick up some of these jars to make some of these tasty treats!

You can now easily find these jars everywhere you look. At your local grocery store. At Bed, Bath & Beyond. Even at garage sales! Would love to hear what you make with them, Kim. Please keep us posted!

Dip in a mason jar sounds great. Salad in a mason jar even better. S'mores cake in a jar - I can hardly wait!! I will be trying lots of these and am heading out to buy the smaller jars, which look so darn cute!! Thanks for sharing, Maria.

It's almost as if you could read my mind, Trish! Go for it!!

I don't know what to try first, but those look SO amazingly decadent. I think I will use blowtorch for marshmallows not the broiler - will let you know how they turn out or better yet, will send photos. Any idea where to get the small jars? I tried Giant Eagle (where I bought the larger ones) and Target.....maybe online?

I'd try Bed, Bath & Beyond (I saw them there last year). Or even Pat Catan's or Walmart. If no luck, try the link I put in my post above (second paragraph: "glass canning jars").

I LOVE this post. I use jars for tons of things already but my favorite have been little bitty pies. They are a huge hit! Thanks for all the great ideas for future jar use.
